Course Overview

Introduces American Sign Language and Deaf culture, focusing on frequently used signs, basic rules of grammar, non-manual aspects of ASL, introductory finger-spelling, and some cultural features of the Deaf community.

Course Advantages

Consider these questions when thinking about taking up American Sign Language (ASL):

  • Have you ever strolled by a couple of people using their hands to communicate and wanted to know what sign language is all about?
  • Have you had some experiences signing but want to expand on your knowledge of sign language?
  • Do you have Deaf relatives or friends or coworkers that you have always wanted to communicate with but didn’t know how?

If you have answered "yes" to one of the questions above then you should be intrigued. The subject matter is also unique in its own way.

Additional Information

Students will need to be capable of working independently to complete assignments and students will also be expected to use a webcam to create and view recordings.

Experience in ASL will not be required.

Faculty will contact all students after the Friday, December 20, registration deadline.
