Discussion and resolution of ethical problems associated with the practice of medicine and the pursuit of biomedical research. Topics include: ethical issues in human experimentation; euthanasia; abortion; fetal research; and reproductive technologies.
This course fulfills the Moral Inquiry general education requirement.
This course examines some of the most important contemporary issues in biomedical ethics. In particular, euthanasia, abortion, allocation of scarce medical resources, informed consent, and issues arising from recent developments in genetics will be among the problems that we will study in detail. During this course, students are expected to acquire an appreciation of the complexity of the dilemmas involved in making decisions in medicine and healthcare, but also to become able to address such dilemmas in a critical/philosophical manner through the application of major ethical theories.
