Employer Recruiting Guidelines
Thank you for your interest in recruiting Stonehill students.
Employers working with the Career Development team, using Stonehill facilities or services, or posting in the College's Handshake database are required to follow several important guidelines and best practices, including those set by the National Association of Colleges and Employers' Principles of Recruiting and Employment - NACE Principles and the U.S. Internship Guidelines - US Department of Labor Internships Programs Under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Please refer to the links below for more information:
- Professional Standards for University Relations & Recruiting
- Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Guidelines
- NACE Position Statement on U.S. Internships
In addition, we will not approve positions that:
- Require students to pay a fee, purchase supplies, or invest money
- Require students to solicit products or services on campus
- Do not require a degree or seek candidates working toward a degree
- Are based in a private home, such as babysitters, personal care attendants and tutors
- Are lacking sufficient detail in the description
- Do not align with school policy
The Career Development Office is committed to offer as many career opportunities as possible to students by employers who wish to hire them. Career Development does not provide resumes, access to student candidate information, or access to our online job listing service to third parties.
The National Association for Colleges and Employers (NACE), the national professional association for college career services offices and employers, defines third party recruiters as follows: “Third-party recruiters are agencies, organizations, or individuals recruiting candidates for temporary, part-time, or full-time employment opportunities other than for their own needs. This includes entities that refer or recruit for profit or not for profit, and it includes agencies that collect student information to be disclosed to employers for purposes of recruitment and employment."
The above definition includes, but is not limited to, the following entities regardless of the fee structure used by the entity to charge for services.
- Employment agencies/organizations that list positions for a number of client organizations and receive payment when a referred candidate is hired. The fee for listing a position is paid either by the firm listing the opening (fee paid) or by the candidate who is hired.
- Search firms—organizations that contract with clients to find and screen qualified persons to fill specific positions. The fees for this service are paid by the clients.
- Contract recruiters—organizations that contract with an employer to act as the employer’s agent in the recruiting and employment function.
- Resume referral firms—commercial organizations that collect data on job seekers that is marketed to prospective employers. Fees may be paid by the employer, the job seeker, or both.
- Commercial job listing/resume collection web sites—it is not compatible with the mission of Career Development to promote businesses which collect candidate resumes for the purpose of marketing those to employers.
An exception to the above policy may be made in the following case: If a third party organization has initiated a formal request that our office work with them for college recruiting logistics, our office will initiate a review process in addition to requiring an agreement that the third party organization will hire students and/or alumni for internal positions only.
Jobs offering only commission-based compensation may not be posted in our Handshake database.
Positions that include commission-based compensation must fully disclose the compensation structure in any job posting or at any on-campus recruiting event.
The Career Development Office at Stonehill College reserves the right to exclude any employer from recruiting activities and to edit, delete, or refuse any employer profile or job posting at any time in Handshake if they do not abide by the guidelines above.
The Career Development Office at Stonehill College advertises programs, workshops, and information sessions held by external employers becasue they may be of interest to our students and alumni. It is important to note that the posting of these events does not indicate the endorsement of the program, company, or orgnization by our office or the college.
The Career Development Office is a member of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) and the Eastern Association of College and Employers (EACE). We adhere to the "Professional Standards for Universtiy Relations & Recruiting" as published by NACE.
When extending employement offers, "The organization should identify a time frame that would be reasonable and appropriate for both the organization and candidates. Providing ample time to the candidate not only helps ensure a reasoned decision, but also creates a positive impression of the organization; ultimately, this reduces retraction and lowers attrition rates."
In addition, "the organization should assess its use of offer deadlines to ensure that the deadlines are not placing undue pressure on the candidate. Using financial incentives (i.e. signing bonuses) to pressure offer recipients to make a quick decision may have an adverse effect on the company's employer brand."
The Career Development team at Stonehill College recognizes there are competitive recruitment initiatives across all industries. We must also recognize that many of our students are navigating the recruitment landscape for the first time. They are diligently researching organizations and opportunities while connecting with our advisors and other campus mentors to evaluate next steps in their careers.
In the spirit of education, we encourage employers to provide a minimum of five business days as a timeframe for students to respond to an internship or job offer. There may be occasions where students ask for an extension for a number of legitimate reasons. For instance, during our exam periods:
- Fall Semester: Friday,December 6 - Wednesday, December 11
- Spring Semester: Monday, May 5 - Friday, May 9th
As Career Advisors, we will encourage students to move expeditiously through their decision-making process. We are committed to helping them, and you, through the recruitment pipeline so all parties feel confident moving forward together.
Career Development is open year-round to assist with students' career-related questions or concerns.
