Respiratory Illnesses
Common respiratory conditions include influenza, pertussis (whooping cough), pneumonia, COVID-19, and RSV. These illnesses spread from person to person through respiratory droplets. A patient becomes infected through inhalation, or by touching something with the virus on it then touching their mouth, nose, or eyes.
Illness Prevention:
- Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, especially before eating.
- Clean high touch items and surfaces frequently with household disinfectants.
- Wear a mask in crowded indoor settings.
- Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or an elbow.
- Stay up to date on your vaccines.
- If you feel ill, take a COVID-19 test. Tests are available at most pharmacies.
- To prevent the spread of illness, stay at home if you experience symptoms. If you need to miss class, consult with faculty to make the proper arrangements.
Treatment:
- Get plenty of rest.
- Stay hydrated.
- Relieve some symptoms with medication like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin).
Recovery:
- Self-isolate until you are fever-free for at least 24 hours and your symptoms start improving.
