Meningitis
Meningitis is inflammation (swelling) of the lining of the brain and spinal cord.
Meningococcal disease is uncommon but can cause serious illness and death in people of all ages. Many different things can cause meningitis. An accurate diagnosis is important because treatment depends on the cause. Bacterial meningitis is a medical emergency and should be treated as soon as possible. Meningococcal vaccines help protect against meningococcal disease.
Signs and Symptoms:
- Fever
- Headache
- Stiff neck
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Photophobia (eyes being more sensitive to light)
- Altered mental status (confusion)
