Justice Scholars: Transforming Lives and Communities

What is the Justice Scholars Program?

The Center for Service & Social Justice launched in the fall of 2018, a service and justice initiative for Stonehill College undergraduates entitled The Justice Scholars Program.  This program is a developmental journey towards active citizenry which engages students in the work of justice, scholarship and service in the spirit of Holy Cross.  Building on already existing programs, students will commit to specified requirements per academic year which will expand their knowledge, skills and expertise in creating a just and compassionate world.

Foundations

The foundations of the Justice Scholars Program are anchored in the Constitution of the Congregation of Holy Cross.

Mission

"The mission is not simple, for the impoverishments we would relieve are not simple.  There are networks of privilege, prejudice and power so commonplace that often neither oppressors nor victims are aware of them.  We must be aware and also understanding by reason of fellowship with the impoverished and by reason of patient learning.  For the kingdom to come in this world, disciples must have the competence to see and the courage to act."  Constitution #14

Crossing Borders

"Our mission sends us across borders of every sort.  Often we must make ourselves at home among more than one people or culture, reminding us again that the farther we go in giving the more we stand to receive.  Our broader experience allows both the appreciation and the critique of every culture and the disclosure that no culture of this world can be our abiding home."
