Dear Members of the Stonehill Community,

At this Eastertide, the College joins people of goodwill throughout the world in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, a spiritual leader and disciple of Christ who modeled courage, compassion, and fortitude each day.

Throughout his papacy, the Pope embodied the teachings of his namesake, Saint Francis of Assisi. Specifically, his ministry focused on cherishing creation, caring for society’s most vulnerable, practicing interfaith dialogue, and validating the inherent dignity of others. His efforts to bring hope to a world in need align with the College’s compassion-centered approach to education, guided by the tenets of the Congregation of Holy Cross.

I am reminded that the Stonehill College Chapel Choir represented our institution at a Papal Audience in Vatican City during the summer of 2023. While Pope Francis traveled through Saint Peter’s Square, the College’s choir sang a rendition of “Vive el Señor Jesus,” the Holy Father’s favorite hymn.

In thanksgiving for his life and ministry, the College is invited to come together this Wednesday at the 12:05 Mass to pray for Pope Francis’s eternal rest and peace.

May his example of strength, kindness, and mercy inspire us as we continue working to bring about a more just and compassionate world.

Yours in Holy Cross,

(Rev.) John Denning, C.S.C.
