Stonehill College has been recognized again this year by The Wall Street Journal for the value it provides students, especially in the areas of career preparation and character development.

In the news outlet’s recently released best colleges survey, Stonehill ranked among the top 13 schools in Massachusetts. Among Catholic institutions in the Commonwealth, Stonehill placed third after College of the Holy Cross and Boston College. Nationally, the College was ranked 173 out of 500 institutions of higher education.

In recent years, The Wall Street Journal has transitioned away from formulating its rankings based on name recognition and other similar factors, instead choosing to place emphasis on the value of the contributions that institutions make to students’ success. Specifically, the publication ranks schools based on three elements: student outcomes, diversity, and learning environment.

In terms of student outcomes, the College received a salary impact score of 87 out of 100, an increase over last year’s score. Based on student survey results, the College scored higher this year across all areas of focus including learning opportunities, preparation for career, and learning facilities. In the category of character development, a measure introduced this year to help assess learning environment, Stonehill earned a score of 79. This new criterion focused on “the extent to which the colleges develop character strengths that help students make a meaningful contribution to society, including moral courage, resilience and fairness.”

Rankings are just one factor that incoming students and families may use to evaluate the right choice for advancing their educational journey, as The Wall Street Journal acknowledged. The article reads, “The WSJ/College Pulse ranking seeks to reward institutions that showcase demonstrable positive outcomes for their students and alumni. However, viewing higher education through this lens may not be best for everyone. The best school for any particular student might be one that’s close to family or friends, offers a particular program of study or matches their values—factors that can’t be analyzed in any one ranking.”
