Professor of International Business Jennifer Swanson recently received the Lifetime Service Award from the Northeast Decision Sciences Institute (NEDSI), an interdisciplinary organization that enables scholars and practitioners to explore the study of managerial decision making. The honor was bestowed upon the Meehan School of Business faculty member in celebration of her meaningful contributions to the institute.
“Receiving this award from the NEDSI is deeply meaningful to me,” Swanson said. “I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to serve this organization and for the many mentors, colleagues, and students who have inspired and supported me along the way.”
Swanson has actively participated in NEDSI activities for nearly 30 years. She has served in multiple roles, including president, program chair, board member, and archivist, among others. She believes her experiences with the institute have dovetailed with her work at Stonehill. In both venues, Swanson has maintained a commitment to advancing the common good.
“The NEDSI seeks to apply quantitative and behavioral methods to address societal challenges,” she said. “Similarly, I have designed courses that equip Stonehill students with analytical and problem-solving tools to make decisions, often using case studies and projects that explore real world issues related to culture, globalization, developing economies, income inequality, women and work, and educational opportunities.”
Outside of Stonehill and the NEDSI, Swanson has spent numerous summers teaching students in Southeast Asia. She has served on the board for MicroLoan Foundation USA, which provides business loans and training to women facing poverty in Africa. Additionally, she has worked on a Fulbright-Hays Group Project in China, participated in a Collaborative Online International Learning program for U.S. and Bolivian students, and developed travel learning communities involving student travel to Europe, Africa, Central America, and Latin America.
Swanson’s recent recognition from the NEDSI follows her receipt of Stonehill College’s Award for Excellence in Advising & Mentoring in May 2024. In a citation conferring this honor, President John Denning, C.S.C., and Vice President for Academic Affairs Peter Ubertaccio noted that the professor is known for her “unwavering commitment” to students.
“She stands as a beacon of care and thoughtful guidance within the Meehan School of Business,” they wrote.
