While developing the 75th Anniversary Exhibit currently set up in Cushing-Martin Hall, Stonehill College’s Archives & Historical Collections team combed through countless alumni and senior class exit surveys to learn more about the impact our faculty have had on our students since 1948. Here’s what respondents had to say about our passionate professors.
Helping Students Find Their Path
Kristin Burkholder, Associate Professor of Environmental Sciences (2012 to Present): “She inspired me to devote myself to a more just and compassionate world through service and environmental science.”
Barbara Estrin, Professor of English (1974 to 2011): “Her love of English and literature inspired me to become an English teacher.”
Debra Salvucci, Associate Professor of Accounting (1984 to 2022) & Dean of the Meehan School of Business (2017 to 2022): “She showed me that it is possible to be a successful woman in predominantly male-oriented field.”
Fostering Critical Thinking
Richard Capobianco, Professor of Philosophy (1989 to Present): “He challenged me to think outside of the conventional way. He actually listens to his students and pushes them to think beyond what they already know.”
Rev. Thomas Lockary, C.S.C., Professor of Mathematics & Physics (1955 to 1980): “He taught that education is not memorizing facts but learning how to find and use the information.”
Wanjiru Mbure, Associate Professor of Communication (2011 to 2022): “She challenged me when I needed it as well as when I did not think I needed it.”

Rev. Thomas Feeley, C.S.C., Professor of Philosophy (1962 to 2001): “His ethics class provided some clear standards for morality and my thinking is much clearer on that subject.”
Mary-Joan Leith, Associate Professor of Religious Studies (1988 to Present): “She taught me to think and analyze which helped me to become more rounded and prepared for life.”
Christopher Wetzel, Assistant Professor of Sociology (2009 to 2023): “He helped grow my desire to be a better person, serve the world, offer my talents, and be more inclusive.”
