Celebrating President's Cup Winner Stephen Cobbs '23
Rev. John Denning, C.S.C., gave remarks honoring the Stonehill senior during the 2023 Student Life Awards Ceremony.
The President’s Cup is awarded to a senior whose Stonehill career demonstrates their steadfast commitment to intellectual excellence and service to others.
This year’s recipient is an inspirational leader who has made exceptional contributions to the Stonehill College community as a scholar, resident assistant, student-athlete and student body representative.
Driven by the pursuit of academic excellence, this student has excelled in his studies and research. As a SURE scholar, he collaborated with Professor Nicole Cyr on a project investigating the link between stress and obesity. He harnessed his love of learning and research in a way that could serve and support others.
As a resident assistant for three years, he helped create a nurturing environment for his fellow students. He went above and beyond to support his residents and provided them access to resources to flourish intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually.
Outside of the residence hall, he was a motivating force on the football field for student-athletes. A dedicated player, he consistently showed up to every practice and game with enthusiasm and energy. He motivated his teammates to give their best performance through his positive attitude and work ethic. His sportsmanship and mental fortitude earned him respect and admiration from his teammates and coaches.
While serving as a voice for the student body through his work with the Student Government Association, he displayed an impressive capacity for relationship-building by engaging with faculty, staff, and students effectively and authentically.
As both SGA Executive Diversity Chair and Executive Board President, this student helped create programming that not only challenged us to think critically about the world around us, but to approach everything we do with the intention of bettering ourselves and others.
This student was heralded as the embodiment of our highest ideals of a Stonehill graduate in the impassioned nominations from peers, staff, and faculty that I received.
I have great personal regard for this year’s recipient, and it is my deep honor to present this year’s President’s Cup to Stephen Cobbs.
Congratulations, Stephen!
