The Award for Excellence in Teaching by Adjunct Faculty is given to a part-time faculty member to acknowledge the invaluable dedication and expertise that adjunct faculty bring to our classrooms and to recognize the impact they have on our students' lives. Stonehill College is proud to bestow the Fall 2024 Award for Excellence in Teaching by Adjunct Faculty on Professor Janet Brown-Sederberg.

For many years, Professor Brown-Sederberg has been a cornerstone of Stonehill's Computer Science program, guiding students through the challenging introductory courses that serve as the foundation for careers in computer science and software engineering. With empathy, sincerity, and unwavering dedication, Professor Brown-Sederberg creates a supportive environment that encourages students to persist through demanding material. Her ability to balance nurturing support with high expectations ensures that students build both confidence and competence.

Professor Brown-Sederberg's contributions extend far beyond the classroom. She has designed and taught two new elective courses—Mobile Computing and Cybersecurity—offering vital additions to the curriculum. Additionally, her elective Python programming course opens the field to a broader audience of beginning programmers. Despite being an adjunct faculty member, Professor Brown-Sederberg's commitment to curriculum development and her collaboration with full-time faculty reflect her integral role in the department's success.

During times when the department faced staffing shortages, Professor Brown-Sederberg rose to the challenge, teaching as many as four or five courses per semester, a testament to her dedication. She continually works with colleagues to refine her courses, integrating evolving industry trends and relatable examples to prepare students for real-world problem-solving. When a new faculty member joined the department, Professor Brown-Sederberg's mentorship was instrumental in restructuring courses to improve the learning experience for both students and instructors.

Professor Brown-Sederberg's efforts have left an indelible mark on her students and the Computer Science program. Her passion for teaching, ability to inspire confidence in beginners, and commitment to student success have made her an invaluable educator.

And so, with deep pride, we confer the Fall 2024 Award for Excellence in Teaching by Adjunct Faculty to you, Professor Janet Brown-Sederberg, for your tireless service, consistent example, and exemplary contributions to Stonehill College.
