Alpha Kappa Delta

Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honor Society, seeks to acknowledge and promote excellence in scholarship in the study of sociology, the research of social problems and such other social and intellectual activities as will lead to improvement in the human condition.

In 1920 sociologist Emory S. Bogardus gathered faculty and graduate students together in order to discuss the research process and promote scholarly writing. It was then that AKD was formed.

The name Alpha Kappa Delta was chosen because the letters represent the first letters in the three Greek words that embody the function of society: anthropos, meaning humankind; katamanthano, meaning to examine closely or acquire knowledge; and diakoneo, meaning to do service. True to the intent of its founder, the goal of AKD is to promote scholarship, particularly student scholarship. Approximately 4,000 new lifetime members are inducted annually.
