Need to Get Away?

Your next getaway is only a book away.  Collection librarian Heather O’Leary offers some suggestions for your Spring Break travels.  Pick the "vacation" that you want and check out the book from Overdrive through the Boston Public Library.  

Vacation Package: Vintage Motel Getaway 

  • Destination: The Murmuring Surf Motel in Treasure Island, Florida
  • The Crew:  Letty Carnahan, her four-year-old niece, various bad guys, the motel owner, and the motel owner's son, who happens to be a police officer, and some (sometimes) charming octogenarians.
  • Activities: Being framed for murder, hiding from the law, entertaining a four-year-old, walking on the beach, and themed bingo nights.
  • The Book: The Newcomer by Mary Kay Andrews  

Vacation Package: Strength and Independence at 30,000 feet.

  • Destination: The whole world
  • The Crew: Real flight attendants who worked for Pan Am starting in the 1960s
  • Activities: Seeing the world, dealing with gender norms of the '60s, and learning how to keep passengers safe in all manner of dangerous scenarios.
  • The Book: Come Fly the World: The Jet-Age Story of the Women of Pan Am by Julia Cooke.  

Vacation Package: Opposites Attract in an English Village

  • Destination: A quaint English Inn
  • The Crew: Eve, a scattered 20-something who is constantly feeling like she's not living up to her family's expectations.  Jacob the owner of the quaint English Inn who loves order and perfection.
  • Activities: Accidentally running over a potential boss after a job interview, cooking, and falling in love.
  • The Book: Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert. 

Vacation Package: Epic '80s House Party with a Side of Family Drama

  • Destination: A chic modern mansion on the waterfront in Malibu in August 1983
  • The Crew: The adult children of a famous 1950s crooner, their friends, and various famous people.
  • Activities: Surfing, an epic, celebrity-filled rager, causing a forest fire, dealing with family drama caused by being the children of a famous 1950s crooner.
  • The Book: Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid
