Help Using Call Numbers
How Collections are Shelved
All material in the library (with the exception of journals, magazines and newspapers) are shelved according to call numbers. There are three different types of call numbers in use:
The majority of the collection is shelved according to its Library of Congress classification number - this includes the main collection, the reference collection, the VHS and DVD collections, the non-picture books in the Curriculum Collection and the books located in the Martin Papers and in the Novak Archives. The Government Documents Collection (in the compact shelving on the second floor) is shelved by SuDocs Number. The picture books in the Curriculum Collection and the music cassettes and CDs are shelved according to local call numbers - or other call numbers.
NOTE: Journals, periodicals, newspapers and magazines are shelved alphabetically according to the title of the item.
MacPhaidin Library provides informational resources that support the College's academic programs. Its goal is to provide faculty and students with the material and services needed for effective teaching, learning and research.
