Curriculum Collection Development Policy
- Objectives of Materials Selection
The Curriculum Collection provides support to the teacher-training program of the campus Department of Education. This collection serves as an aid to the educational and professional development of Stonehill students who are studying to become teachers. Part of those skills involves the ability to evaluate the quality of works in children's literature. - Authority for Selection
Faculty interest is the primary force that drives selection. Educational kits, games, charts and boxes of activities are purchased as a result of faculty requests. The Collection Development Librarian will keep abreast of award winners in Children's Literature and other notable titles in order to supplement requests from faculty. - Reference Aids Used in the Selection of Materials
Reputable, professionally prepared selection aids shall be consulted when applicable. These sources may include, but are not restricted to, such sources as the following: Library Journal, Caldecott and Newbery Awards lists, and The Boston Globe - Criteria Used in the Selection of Materials
Selection will be at the Basic Information Level (see ALA guidelines), where the material serves to introduce Stonehill students to award winning and popular children's literature. In addition, instructional tools and kits will be collected at faculty request to provide students with opportunities to integrate the literature with specific instruction goals. - Non - Book Formats
Limited material in video, DVD, CD-ROM and audio cassette will be selected. Some computers in the Reference Area are equipped with educational software. Budget restraints prohibit extensive collection in this area. Therefore, purchases will be limited to specific faculty requests.
MacPhaidin Library provides informational resources that support the College's academic programs. Its goal is to provide faculty and students with the material and services needed for effective teaching, learning and research.
