Tim Coughlin
Timothy J. Coughlin '80

The Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Scholarship will award scholarships, on an annual basis, to academically qualified students with a demonstrated financial need. The recipients will be members of the Stonehill College football, women's lacrosse or men's lacrosse teams.

A member of the Class of 1980, Tim was well-known, admired and respected all across campus. He was a member of the College's football team, earning the MVP award during his senior year; a Director of the student-run campus pub, Brother Mike's; and was involved with the Big Brother/Big Sister program.

A highly successful government bond trader, Timmy rose to the position of Senior Managing Director of Cantor Fitzgerald Securities and Espeed when his life was tragically cut short on September 11, 2001.

Recipients of the Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Scholarship will be chosen by the Stonehill College Scholarship Committee in consultation with the Director of Athletics.

Stonehill student-athletes benefit so greatly from the support of Tim's scholarship and they are proud to embody his play hard spirit. Learn more below from alumni and coaches who reflect on the impact of the Coughlin Scholarship.

Words of Thanks from Coughlin Scholarship Recipients

Dante Brito, Class of 2015

Football
”The scholarship is one of the reasons I was able to finish my degree from Stonehill. I was on the verge of leaving Stonehill for financial reasons. This scholarship helped give me the opportunity of finishing what I started and allowed me to accomplish the things I do today. Because of this scholarship, I am fortunate enough to know, understand and relate to the wonderful man named Tim Coughlin. ”

Jenna Gilman, Class of 2017

Women’s Lacrosse
"The impact that Stonehill has had on my life is immeasurable. I received the highest quality education, I achieved my dream of playing college lacrosse, and I met the best of friends who will be in my life forever. I learned how to be a professional and I built a strong foundation for my nursing career. Stonehill changed the trajectory of my life forever. The Coughlin Scholarship made my attendance of Stonehill possible and I am forever grateful to be a recipient of it."

Head Football Coach
"Timothy Coughlin and his family have made a tremendous impact on the Stonehill Football program. His memory has been honored through his family’s generosity and consistent devotion to our program, and we honor him every day by tapping the “Play Hard” sign outside of our locker room before we step on the field.

Many of our student-athletes were afforded scholarship dollars through the Coughlin Memorial Fund, allowing them to pursue the same degree and have the same great experience at Stonehill that Tim had.

It was always a great experience/opportunity to attend the Coughlin Golf Tournament every year and meet with Tim’s family and friends. They care deeply for Stonehill and have never waivered in their passion for supporting our Athletic programs, namely football and lacrosse. Timothy and his family have made a lasting impact on myself, our student-athletes and our athletic department.

We are honored to play the sport we love on Coughlin Memorial Field every Saturday in the Fall."

Head Women's Lacrosse Coach
We are incredibly grateful for the Coughlin family’s consistent generosity to the Stonehill Women’s Lacrosse program. The annual awards we were able to give to young female athletes often made Stonehill an option when it otherwise would not be. Those women came to Stonehill and made our team and campus community better the same way Tim did. We remember Tim EVERY time we walk out to our game field that bears his name.

As it so happens, one of my daughter's best friends Louisa is a relative of Tim’s and she often comes to campus and sees our team show their respect to Tim by tapping his sign or giving all they have on his field.

Thank you again to the entire Coughlin Family for including Stonehill Women’s Lacrosse in Tim’s legacy."

Thank you so much for awarding me The Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Scholarship for the 2015-2016 academic year. It was an absolute pleasure to be able to attend the Cogs Classic and meet you, your family, and all of the wonderful people who were lucky enough to know Tim.

There are no words that can express how thankful I am for this generous gift. Not only does this scholarship allow me to continue my education and athletic endeavors at Stonehill, it allows me to pursue my childhood dream of playing collegiate lacrosse and having a career in the psychology field.

At this point of my life, I expected to be at a mediocre school and perhaps with a part time job. However, generous people like you were able to take that expectation and destroy it. Never did I expect to be playing football for such an amazing school with a close-knit community.

The Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Scholarship has changed my life and I am immensely thankful for what I have received.
