COGS Classic Update

Cogs Classic logo with golf clubs

Thank you for your past support of the COGS Classic golf outing and the Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Scholarship Fund at Stonehill College. After much thought, we have decided to discontinue the COGS Classic golf outing.

For more than 20 years you have been amazingly loyal and generous in memory of Cogs. His spirit lives on with everyone who knew him and who experienced his friendship.

Your participation has raised almost $3 million, a portion of which was used to support investments in the beautiful Stonehill campus. Tim’s name is proudly displayed in each of these locations:

  • The lobby of the Leo J. Meehan School of Business
  • The football locker room and training room in the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex
  • The Coughlin Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium

Of course, the most enduring part of Tim’s legacy is the Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Scholarship. Over the years, your generosity has enabled the fund to grow to a value of
$2 million. To date, we have awarded $900,000 in scholarships to 60 student-athletes, most of whom received it more than once. Read testimonials from two of these grateful recipients.

We ask that you continue to remember Cogs in your own way when you gather as friends, classmates and colleagues. Please view pictures, videos and speeches from past COGS Classics throughout this website and continue your support with a gift to the TJC Scholarship Fund.

With sincere gratitude,

A Note from Rob Coughlin

In the difficult time following 9/11, and the elusive search for closure that was not coming, one outlet for healing became the search for Timmy's spirit, or places that reminded one of him (remembering also that there were countless families we knew going through the same ordeal). Murphy’s Pub, Finnegan's Wake, Old Memorial in Tampa, Waterville in Ireland, The Stonehill Header, Westhampton CC, The Bantry Bay Pub near Calvary (sure I missed some). They became true places of healing the shattered glass.
But the Cogs Classic became the Grand Slam of that whole process. Celebrating many of the various friend groups that Tim loved and cherished so much while building a true legacy at Stonehill that continues to give back to this day; gathering people for a day where the laughs were constant, the memories were sharp and Stonehill served as the beneficiary was a winning formula.
It became a landmark day on the calendar, one of the best days of the year, and it was a significant part of the healing process for the Coughlin family and friends. Renewal. And our children, Timmy's children, were able to feel this powerful force, and one night at Plandome, especially after Maura spoke, it hit me that what once seemed impossible, did happen: we were able to heal.
From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you all for your love, friendship, generosity and devotion to Tim, and all you did to make the Cogs Classic the iconic day that will always live on, just like Timmy's memory.
Love to all,
Robbie

The resolution, in my opinion, is to honor the legacy of Timmy's life, and that legacy very much included his alma mater, Stonehill College. Let us return each year and have a happy day ... never a sad one and remember him and help support a place he loved.

Thank You

Thank you for your support of the Cogs Classic and Stonehill College. Since 2002, we have raised close to $3 million to support the Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Scholarship, the Coughlin Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium, the football locker room and athletic training room in the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex and the Leo J. Meehan School of Business.

Through the years, this was a special occasion to remember a true friend whose passion for life lives on in all of those who were touched by his smile, his laughter, his friendship and his generosity.

Please enjoy this video that showcases the many ways that Tim Coughlin is remembered on Stonehill's campus.

Coughlin Scholarship

In tribute to his commitment and generosity to Stonehill College, the family and friends of Timothy J. Coughlin have established, in perpetuity, the Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The Coughlin Fund will award scholarships, on an annual basis, to academically qualified students with a demonstrated financial need. The recipients will be members of the Stonehill College football, women’s lacrosse or men’s lacrosse teams.

A member of the Class of 1980, Tim was well-known, admired and respected all across campus. He was a member of the College’s football team, earning the MVP award during his senior year; a director of the student-run campus pub, Brother Mike’s; and was involved with the Big Brother/Big Sister program.

A highly successful government bond trader, Timmy rose to the position of Senior Managing Director of Cantor Fitzgerald Securities and eSpeed when his life was tragically cut short on September 11, 2001.

Recipients of the Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Scholarship Fund will be chosen by the Stonehill College Scholarship Committee in consultation with the Director of Athletics.
