Biography

Constantinos Mekios is an Associate Professor of Philosophy. His main research interests are in the philosophy of science, with a focus on the philosophy of biology, and he has published several papers that examine the nature of biological explanation, as well as the methodological foundations of Systems Biology. More recently, he co-edited with Elly Vintiadis a collection of philosophical essays about facts that do not have explanations. The book is titled Brute Facts and it was published in 2018 by Oxford University Press.

Mekios grew up in Athens, Greece, and arrived in the United States as an international student athlete. He played college basketball at SUNY Stony Brook while majoring in biochemistry and philosophy. Before earning his Ph.D. in philosophy from Boston University, he pursued graduate studies in genetics and received M.A. and M.Phil. degrees from the Department of Genetics and Development at Columbia University. At Stonehill, he is teaching Philosophy of Science, Biomedical Ethics, Early Modern Philosophy, and a course titled Genetics and Human Nature, which explores the impact of advances in the biological sciences on our understanding of human nature. In addition to his academic activities mentioned above, Mekios produces a weekly radio show on Harvard University’s station (WHRB 95.3FM) where he plays obscure records from around the world.
