Digging Deep
Just over 50 years ago, Stonehill received the Ames Shovel Collection, which was donated to the College by Arnold B. Tofias, who found the collection when he purchased the former Ames Shovel factory buildings in Easton. This unique collection is housed and displayed in Cushing-Martin Hall.
Over the years, shovels have found their way into life on campus. First-Year Experience classes often visit the Ames Collection, and student interns assist with research and exhibits. Since 2008, the senior class president has selected a shovel that represents the class and presents it at Academic Convocation. The shovel is then displayed in the MacPháidín Library throughout the academic year.
The Skyhawk football team has their team shovel present at all games, practices and lifts to represent their mottos—Dig and Keep Diggin'—and the team's core values of discipline, intellect and grit.
