In the 43 years since you graduated from Stonehill College, you have distinguished yourself as a leader in the field of marine organic chemistry, researching how human activities influence the carbon cycle in the coastal stream.

As a faculty member at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science at the College of William and Mary, you cofounded the undergraduate program in marine science.

Your interdisciplinary research appears in leading peer-reviewed publications, and you have held leadership positions at the university level and in the scientific community. A skilled editor, you are an award-winning teacher and a respected mentor to colleagues and students, in particular encouraging more female students towards careers in the sciences.

Given the range and depth of your accomplishments and your understated, collaborative approach, we can see why the National Science Foundation—where you are currently program director of the Chemical Oceanography Program—has twice appointed you to top positions.

In recognition of a stellar career in science, which reflects positively on Stonehill College, the Alumni Association is proud to present you with its Outstanding Alumnus Award for 2020.
