Assistant Director of Communications, Noble and Greenough School

Currently, I'm the Assistant Director of Communications at Noble and Greenough School, an independent school in Dedham, MA.

I interned at a non-profit organization while at Stonehill, and I knew I wanted to continue at a non-profit of some kind. After graduating, I worked at a local newspaper doing copyediting and writing. I eventually got a job at Boston University as a Public Relations and Marketing Specialist. I worked in the Communications & Marketing Department, mostly writing and sending out press releases, maintaining an internal news website, pitching media, etc.

In my present position I help write, edit, and take photos for the school's alumni magazine (published 3 times a year), parents' magazine (also, 3 times a year), monthly parents' e-newsletter, and school website. I'm also the webmaster for the school, and I update the web on a daily basis. We do some media relations work, mostly a hometown news program, and also assist other departments with special projects like the Admissions View Book.

Reflecting on my time at Stonehill, my internship experience taught me that self-sufficiency, the ability to multi-task, and being a self-starter are highly valued in the workforce, especially at non-profits where tight budgets require folks to wear multiple hats. As for classes, I often draw on things I learned in Professor Yu's Research class, any of Professor Mattina's classes, and ANY class where writing and editing were required.

As for advice, I would say that our field is being affected, more than most, with the advent of new and emerging technologies. Stay ahead of the curve, learn how to communicate in an evolving market and continue to take opportunities to learn new things.

Everyday I utilize skills learned during my internship. I realize now how highly prized they are in the workforce.
