Stonehill College & University of Notre Dame 3+2 Engineering Dual Degree Program
Stonehill College and the University of Notre Dame have partnered to offer students a unique college experience -- the 3+2 dual-degree engineering program.
Through this initiative, students attend Stonehill for three years to earn Bachelor of Arts in a science discipline, and then transfer to Notre Dame for two years to earn a second bachelor's degree in engineering.
Year-by-year Plan:
Year 1
Enter Stonehill as a first year student and start taking courses under our Cornerstone Program, which allows you to build core competencies in critical thinking, effective communication, social responsibility, and personal growth and discovery. You also select one of our science majors* as your focus (see chart for details) and begin a series of science and math classes in your field.
Year 2-3
Complete the Cornerstone Program by taking courses in foreign language, natural and social sciences, ethics, and a three-part Learning Community while building a strong foundation in math and the science of your choice. You are also encouraged to complete an internship or study abroad.
Year 4-5
Transfer to Notre Dame for two years of rigorous engineering coursework and research, specializing in a specific concentration** (see chart for details). After completing your final year at Notre Dame, you graduate with two bachelor's degrees: a liberal arts B.A. from Stonehill College in your science major and a B.S. in engineering from Notre Dame.

Why should I choose a 3+2 program instead of a standard four-year program?
The benefits of a 3+2 dual-degree program are enormous:
- By obtaining both a solid liberal arts degree and a strong engineering degree, you will gain a more robust education and be better prepared for your graduate school or career plans.
- Although demand for engineers is high, interest in this field is quite low in the U.S. despite very high starting salaries. A dual-degree offers increased leverage in hiring negotiation.
- With the combination of Stonehill's and Notre Dame's strong undergraduate research opportunities, you will have far more in-the-field research experience to support your integrated learning at both schools.

Can I participate in research?
Stonehill's faculty frequently conducts publishable research with students through the Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE). In addition, Notre Dame offers undergraduate opportunities for cutting-edge research in a variety of facilities across campus, from designing micro air vehicles to studying the degradation of organic contaminants in groundwater.
If I want to enter the 3+2 Engineering Program at Stonehill, do I also have to apply to Notre Dame?
No -- when you meet the minimum requirements (see below) and/or are accepted in the program at Stonehill, you are automatically accepted to complete the program at Notre Dame. Upon transfer to Notre Dame, students in the program receive the same consideration for scholarships and other types of financial aid as other transfer applicants to the University. They are no longer eligible for financial aid from Stonehill College. Students adhering to the financial aid application procedures will be considered for assistance within the policies consistently applied to all other Notre Dame students except as may be restricted by appropriate government regulations.
If I'm accepted into the program, what are the academic requirements?
Students must satisfy Stonehill's academic guidelines as well as the following criteria:
- Cumulative GPA of at least 3.3
- A grade of at least a C in all courses
- 60+ credit hours that can be transferred to satisfy Notre Dame's engineering requirements
- Recommendation for admission by the relevant department chair
