Special Opportunities

If you’re looking for an out-of-the-ordinary learning experience, you’ll find it at Stonehill College.

What would you like to do? Study abroad or do an internship in another country? How about designing your own independent research with a faculty mentor? Maybe you want to challenge yourself academically or expand your horizons through hands-on community service. If you can dream it, you can do it at Stonehill.

Can I do research?
Absolutely. At Stonehill, we believe that students learn best by doing. Laboratory, fieldwork and independent research projects are integral to many courses. Interested in pursuing more in-depth research? Stonehill offers a directed study/independent research program during the academic year as well as the Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) during the summer.

Over the past three years, nearly a dozen SURE participants have had the opportunity to co-author published research, giving them a competitive edge in both the job market and in application to graduate school.

“I absolutely loved doing SURE [Stonehill Undergraduate Research Experience]. Living on campus in a small community over the summer was great. I got to know a whole different group of students, plus work with all the professors in the department. And I got a lot of practice using all the different lab instrumentation; in fact, other students now come to me for help! But best of all, I was able to continue my research this year, and now, it’s going to become my senior thesis. I can’t say enough about SURE.”

What types of internships can I do?
The sky’s the limit. All majors are encouraged to strengthen their career preparation by completing an internship before graduation. Stonehill’s location is ideal: The college is readily accessible to wide variety of businesses, museums, institutes and world-renowned hospitals and biotechnology in and around Boston.

Looking to get your work experience farther a field? Then check out our international internships: recent students have undertaken internships abroad at Serono Pharmaceutical in Geneva, Switzerland; the Royal National Throat, Ear & Nose Hospital in London, England; and the Dublin Zoo in Dublin, Ireland, to name a few.

Can I study abroad?
Yes, and in fact, it’s encouraged! Each year, a third of the junior class completes either a semester or year abroad program. Some of the most popular sites are at universities in Australia, England, Italy, Ireland and Scotland. Check out the International Programs for more information on planning your international experience.

“I knew I wanted to teach Spanish, and that if I wanted to do that, I had to really understand the culture. Studying in Central America changed me completely. It gave me a whole new perspective on life and the sense that there’s so much more out there.”

Honors Program
Looking for a challenge? Talented and highly motivated students of all majors can take part in Stonehill’s Honors Program. By combining rigorous academic standards with relevant and stimulating extracurricular events, the Honors Program aims to lead students into full and creative engagement with the world. Completing the Honors Program earns students the designation “Stonehill Scholar” upon graduation.

Community-Based Learning
Take your learning outside the classroom with one of Stonehill’s many Community-Based Learning (CBL) experiences. CBL, which combines hands-on service with traditional classroom work, is offered by a number of departments. Students can deepen their learning – and make a difference — in a sociology course where they volunteer at a local youth agency; a fine arts course where they work with middle-school students on photography; and an economics course where they analyze data for a community agency.
