Manthala George, Jr. '62

Manthala George, Jr. '62 knows through first-hand experience that receiving a quality education is the most critical component for future success.

The superintendent of schools in Brockton, MA from 1984-1994, George spent his entire 32-year career working in Brockton's public school system. A lifelong resident of that city, he received his bachelor's degree in economics from Stonehill in 1962 before receiving his master's degree in education from Bridgewater State in 1971.

Last June it was announced that George would become the first living person to have a Brockton city school named after him and on January 21, 2009 the Manthala George, Jr. School officially opened its doors.

Though as the years pass his time as a student at Stonehill becomes a distant memory, his relationship with the College remains strong.

"Everyday, I spend part of my day on campus," says George, who takes daily walks on campus and celebrates morning Mass at the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows in Donahue Hall.

In addition, in his role as Chair of the Board of Trustees for Brockton's Trinity Catholic Academy, he often works with Dr. Katie Conboy, Professor Karen Anderson, Sr. Jean Gribaudo, Fr. Tom Looney and President Cregan.

While the physical  growth and beauty of the Stonehill campus continually amazes him, it is the members of its community that have always made it a special place for George.

"The quality of the students, professors, administrators and members of the clergy that I have met is what really makes Stonehill a special place. I have never felt apart from Stonehill and it has always been a very special part of my life."
