Joseph Favazza Named Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
February 12, 2013

Stonehill President Rev. Mark T. Cregan, C.S.C. recently announced the appointment of Joseph Favazza as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
"I am honored to pick up the mantle of academic leadership from Katie Conboy for whom I have great respect and admiration," said Favazza. " I look forward to working closely with faculty to strengthen Stonehill's national reputation as a place that deeply engages students at the intersection of key commitments: excellence in teaching and learning; the transformative study of the humanities, sciences and the arts; career opportunities of pre-professional and professional programs; and high impact experiential practices woven seamlessly into the curriculum."
Favazza joined the College in 2005 when he was recruited from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. to be the College's Dean of General Education and Interdisciplinary Programs. In 2008, he assumed the position of Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty.
Last July, he was named Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs during the sabbatical of Katie Conboy, who recently was named the Provost and Senior Vice President at Simmons College in Boston.
Since Favazza's arrival, he has played a vital role in both the academic mission of the institution and key College-wide initiatives. They include the following:
- With former trustee Sen. Paul Kirk, he re-visioned the Martin Institute and worked closely with its director, Peter Ubertaccio, to implement that vision so that the Institute could become the locus of interdisciplinary learning at Stonehill.
- In working with Conboy, he oversaw the establishment and development of the Centers for Teaching and Learning and Community-Based Learning
- Favazza was also instrumental in the development of the Catholic Intellectual Traditions requirement and has shepherded the process through implementation.
- Additionally, he has developed processes and protocols to support Academic Department Chairs in their work and has supported them in their efforts to develop and assess successful learning and postgraduate outcomes for the benefit of Stonehill's students.
"Joe has worked closely with the Enrollment Management Division in the recruitment and enrollment of students; the Student Affairs leadership to create a more cohesive curricular - co-curricular experience for students; and the Mission Division on numerous initiatives. Through all of this, he has been, at the same time, a collaborative and affable colleague while remaining focused on task. Joe came to Stonehill as a seasoned administrator as well as being a good faculty colleague and he has used those skills for the betterment of the Stonehill mission," said President Cregan.
